With the recent decision by the administration to rescind the protections afforded by DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), Columbus religious and business leaders staged a rally on the front steps of City Hall. Over 450 people attended.
Local community leaders including Filipe Martinez (First Presbyterian), Nic Cable (UUCCI), Hanna Omar (Islamic Society), Sylvia Babcock (Executive Director of Su Casa), and others, spoke passionately and eloquently about the DACA program and the Dreamers.
Our local Cummins President/COO Rich Freeland spoke about his appreciation for the young people affected by this and also said very clearly “DACA is good for the economy” giving many examples of the positive impact by the Dreamers.
He also reported that Cummins Chairman and CEO Tom Linebarger (along with 500 other American Business leaders) have sent an open letter to Congress to preserve the DACA program and to enact the bipartisan Dream Act. In Tom’s words: “The decision by the Trump Administration to rescind DACA is discriminatory, harmful, and sets our country back. These young people deserve every opportunity to continue living, working, and thriving in the US – for nearly all of them, the US is the only country they have ever known. This is their home.”
WE ARE BETTER THAN THIS!
Please take a few minutes to watch the following video, especially listen to the heartfelt stories from 3 of our Columbus Dreamers near the 20:20 mark.
