UUCCI Minister Emeritus, Rev. Dennis McCarty, served our Congregation for 12 years, from 2003-2015, and was our first full-time Minister. During his time here, our church changed and grew. The city of Columbus has changed, as well: become more diverse, more cosmopolitan, more tolerant.
Rev. Dennis first came to us at age 53 as a Master of Divinity graduate from Meadville Lombard Theological School, the Unitarian Universalist divinity school in Chicago. He was a poster boy for midlife career change. Before going into ministry, he had been a sailor in the United States Coast Guard; an electrician in the heavy construction industry; an English teacher; and a several-times published novelist.
Though he has officially retired from parish ministry, Rev. Dennis remains active in the Unitarian Universalist Ministers’ Association and also in the arts. He is a freelance writer on religious, ethical, and social justice subjects; a playwright; and a songwriter. His goal, he says, is to broaden the range of Unitarian Universalist musical expression to encompass blues, pop, and rock ‘n’ roll idioms as well as our traditional jazz, folk, and classical leanings.
